Abortion, one of the most hotly debated topics in American society, continually has the support of the majority of Americans. The Pew Research Center recently conducted an assessment and found that sixty-one percent of Americans support abortion.
Over four thousand adults that were polled during the survey, which was taken from July 22nd – August 4th, 2019. Pew’s findings regarding the study also concluded that American’s don’t want to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Furthermore, consistent with the findings, public opinion is against States working to make obtaining an abortion more difficult. Also, a vast majority of the results suggest that most of the constituents agree with Democrats over Republicans.
Among those surveyed, those who identified as Republican were more likely to say that abortion should be illegal. However, Republicans are deeply split on the issue with seventy-seven percent of Conservative Republicans saying that all of most cases of abortion should be illegal. However, fifty-seven percent of moderate and liberal Republicans think abortion should be legal in all or most cases.
Also, of those surveyed, fifty-seven percent of the public says that they know someone who has had an abortion, while forty-two percent say they do not.
Differences in views regarding abortions is not contained to the political divide; rather, there are significant divisions based on religious affiliation, education, and age. However, there are virtually no differences in the opinions of women and men.
From the survey; sixty percent of white Protestants and sixty-four percent of black Protestants say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. However, seventy-seven percent of white evangelical protestants say it should be illegal.
Further, a majority of Catholics also support legal abortion, fifty-six percent, while only forty-two percent say illegal. Those who are not affiliated with a religion, eighty-three percent, say that abortion should be legal.
Regarding education, American adults with higher levels of educational attainment are more supportive of legal abortion as well. Further, seventy-two percent of those with postgraduate degrees state that abortion should be legal. A smaller majority of those who have not completed college fifty-seven percent also say the same.
